Poker is a fun game. For some, it’s a good way to spend some time with friends, for others, it’s an excuse to get out of the house, and for a few skilled and lucky ones, it’s a great way to make a living. For everybody though, poker is a microcosm of life. The skills that you acquire from playing poker are can be of great use in everyday living.

When you’re at a table reading people, you’re observing mannerisms, paying attention to physical and verbal cues, and you’re learning what people are thinking and reacting appropriately. In every social situation, you’re doing the same thing. You are picking up cues that people are leaving, how they physically respond to your stimuli.

Let’s say that you’re at a party-you can use the skills that you’ve developed as a poker player to avoid potentially awkward situations. When you’re talking to someone and they start to shift uncomfortably, or they start glancing around furtively, or their speech pattern changes from enthusiastic rapport to short, clipped responses, stop and take notice. You may be heading down a conversational road that is making someone uncomfortable, a good observer will be able to pick that up and shift the conversation appropriately like a good player in any casino games.
