Dog Health Advice: Fur Not Good Sunscreen

You might think the most important bit of dog health advice would be to let your furry loved one spend all day enjoying the outdoors. But you’d only be half-right.
You know we must protect our children and ourselves from the sun. But do you know that leading canine health experts now say that the most important dog health advice they can give is to protect your dog from the sun, too?
Dog Health Advice: Identifying Dog Sunburn
Like we humans, dogs need sunlight to help balance their bodies’ levels of calcium with their metabolism.
Yet too much ultraviolet radiation can irritate our dogs’ skin as it does our own, causing sunburn.
Dog sunburn begins as redness and hair loss.
Where sunburn first appears:
• bridge of the nose
• tips of the ears
• belly
Dog Sunburn Dangers
• aggravates any existing skin problems
• skin ulcers (sores)
• infection
• cancer
Sunburn and Dog Breed
• Pale and short-hair dogs are particularly prone to sunburn, usually on the nose, abdomen, groin, and inside of the legs. Being close to the ground, they not only are affected by the downward sunlight, but also by sun reflecting up from pavement or hot sand.
• Some breeds, like Weimaraners and Boxers, are predisposed to cancer. Therefore, they must have extra protection from the sunburns and UV rays to avoid a kind of skin cancer.
How you can protect your pets:
Think about the precautions that you take to prevent yourself from sunburn and UV exposure. You stay out of the sun at the peak hours like noon to 3PM, use sunblock and cover up, don’t you? Those same suggestions can work for your dog.
Sunburn prevention tips especially for dogs:
• Be sure that your dog is inside the house or in a shaded area during the sun’s peak hours, even on overcast days.
• Apply sunblock to the bridge of the dog’s nose, ear tips and other small, sensitive areas whenever the dog is outside for more than a few minutes.
• Consider some sort of covering for your dog. Some veterinarians say that the most important and effective protection is a type of bodysuit for dogs, which is designed to block ultraviolet rays and prevent sunburn.
In the end, it’s still good dog health advice to let your dog play outdoors. But spare your “best friend” the pain of sunburn and its consequences.

Fighting the SPAM War

It is reported that 60%+ of internet traffic on mail servers are spam messages. If you run a website, you can be sure that you are (or will be over time) receiving a tremendous amount of unsolicited email messages. If you haven’t started a website yet, remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. There are safeguards you can use to minimize the number of unwanted messages you receive.
WHOIS data: When you register a domain name, you are required to provide contact information for the WHOIS database, which can later be harvested by spammers for e-mail addresses. To protect yourself from such unscrupulous people, I suggest using a dummy account with a free email provider such as Yahoo or Hotmail (don’t forget to check it at least once a month) – if you’ve already registered your site and have listed your primary email address in the WHOIS contact information, it is highly recommended that you update the information with a new dummy email address. Your host and registrar will have your primary email address on file – you simply need to remember to keep your information with them up to date. If this seems like too much work for you, you can always use a WHOIS privacy service such as the WhoisGuard service provided by www.namecheap.com ($4.88 – which is a great value).
Your web pages: One of the first things I do when creating a website is create a contact form with the email address embedded in the mailer script such as PHP or ASP. Why? There is a lot of software floating around out there designed solely to crawl website harvesting them for valid email addresses (some will even ignore the robots.txt file completely). Once you’ve created your forms, you can then begin to include your email addresses in your web pages for those who wish to email you directly from their email clients – you can write your email address as yourname[at]yourdomain.com and instead of using the ‘mailto:’ link – hyperlink it to your contact form. You may also include a note for your visitors to replace the [at] with the @ sign. Make sure you remember to do this with all the email addresses within your site.
Newsgroups/forums/subscriptions: It’s a hard pill to swallow, but these areas are not safe from email harvesting either and even worse, some newsletter publishers don’t even adhere to their own privacy policies (very rare, but it does happen). Be careful where you post your email address and don’t make it a habit to sign up with every forum you should come across. Make sure you find the information useful to you and that you trust the website first. For extra protection, use a an email address other than your primary one for all your subscriptions (ex: subscriptions@yourdomain.com). If you wish to post an email address in the forums for the readers to contact you, try to use the format described in the previous section with a note to replace [at] with @ and hyperlink it to the contact form on your website.
Unrouted email messages: An unrouted email message is a message addressed to an email with your domain name that does not exist – i.e. admin@yourdomain.com, only you never created an admin@yourdomain.com account. The default setting is to have these messages delivered to the root email account. Many webmasters don’t realize this and the webmail for the root account never gets checked – I came across an account with 75 pages of unrouted email messages (roughly 14,000 messages) and taking up about 15MB of their of webspace. Believe it or not, some spam software is designed to create plausible names (i.e. admin, contact, customerservice, webmaster, abuse, etc. @yourdomain.com) and just go for broke and hope the account exists.
If you are using CPanel, you can check your default email account by clicking on the “webmail” icon from your control panel home page. You can also set what your unrouted messages will do by clicking on the “mail” icon and selecting “default address”, then “set default address” – you can then choose to blackhole unrouted messages (just let them disappear into cyberspace – my personal favorite), fail messages (bounce them back to sender) or you can specify an email address you want them forwarded to. If you are afraid someone simply misspelled your email address and you want to sift through the unrouted messages, set up an email account specifically for them (ex: unrouted@yourdomain.com) and remember to check it every week or so.
SPAM filters: I consider spam filters to be a final line of defense if all others fail. Currently, I use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email application and it comes with a built in spam filter which can be trained to catch unsolicited email. There are also many other SPAM filter software out there for email clients such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc. which are worth a look. To find out more information on the available spam filters, check out www.spamfighter.com (for Outlook and Outlook Express – free) or do a quick google search for “free anti spam software” for your platform.
A special note for AOL users: While I have nothing against AOL and they are trying very hard to combat spam, they are slowly, but surely losing the battle. I’ve had two email accounts opened with them, and before I even had a chance to sign up for anything or even tell my family about it – I received spam. I do not know why they are so prone to spam, but something tells me it has a lot to do with their member directory. My advice, get another email address – just remember to check your AOL email every once in a while to delete the messages. I’ve also noticed that a lot of other subscription services are declining to email AOL users due to their new “report spam” button being far too close to the delete button and webmasters of legitimate email lists are getting warnings from their ISPs.
In closing, I have managed to keep my current primary email spam free (literally) for over a year using these methods, and before that I kept my primary email address spam free for just over two. I will plainly admit that I have no sympathy for spammers, and I make sure to hunt down anyone who sends me spam and report them until their site is either shut down or their ISP is added to a block list.
If you want to learn more on fighting this spam war, there are many valuable resources online such as www.spamhaus.org which hosts a blacklist of known spammers and www.spamcon.org which has a wealth of information on protecting yourself against spam.
A Beginners Guide To Buying The Best Notebooks

The world of laptops is changing each & every day, thus making it difficult to stay up-to-date on all the latest advancements even for the tech savvy shopper. Notebooks mostly have replaced desktop machines as the favoured choice for home PC procurement. Even though Apple laptop computers are enormously popular in the press and do not have virus issues, more often than not other Windows-installed notebook computers provide a very cost effective option, so long as a reputable virus protection software has been put onto the machine.
The most crucial factor to decide on before looking for notebooks is their overall usage. Understanding how a notebook is intended to be used helps you to discover what extra programmes are needed. This is vital in figuring out how good the notebook computer must be. Someone who is planning on only crawling the Web and doing a small bit of word processing tasks they will absolutely not demand as good a laptop computer as someone recording music or playing the newest 3D computer games. Find a vast selection of technology products such as; laptops, iPod speakers and LCD televisions from leading brands online.
There are two main factors that affect the power of a laptop computer more than all others; these are the CPU and the overall amount of Random Access Memory. A speedier CPU permits the notebook to perform tasks much more quickly, whilst additional RAM also permits for quicker speeds because the CPU can make the most of the RAM to momentarily increase the amount of processor memory offered for it is own internal tasks. If like most people that sounds a little perplexing, simply remember: that the more RAM the notebook has, the faster it will function.
The internal storage device is where all software programs and computer files, for example pictures & videos are put. Clearly, the larger size of the internal storage drive the more that can be stored on it. Approximately all notebook computers come with DVD-R drives built-in. BluRay drives may also be available as a more expensive selection.
When you have an idea for the required power of the computer, the next big decision involves choosing a specific manufacture. Apple laptop computers are exceptionally popular, well-built, & easy to operate, but they normally tend to cost roughly twice as much as a comparably spec Microsoft powered laptop computer.
Sony notebooks are trendy machines to think about if you are performing a extensive amount of multimedia work. A large number of their products come with FireWire slots that allow for easy connectivity to a variety of digital video devices, such as digital cameras or digital video recorders.
Toshiba laptops are known for their power & suitability for running company programmes. They are reliable, sturdy computers.
Finally, Acer notebooks provide by far the most cost-effective choice. They are pretty easy on the pocket, but still give enough reliability & power to be regarded as an exceptional acquisition.

I never thought I would have to say GOODBYE to my best friend… But that’s what I had to do today I had to let go of her forever -
There was no other way For me to face reality Or pretend to be okay I had no concept -
Of how hard it would be To actually let go Of this huge part of me… Not tomorrow or ever -
Will my life be the same Without my Grannio here Life seems to be a game – Of chance and questions…
Questions that never end And have no answers That can begin to mend The gaping hole inside of me
Nor come close to healing My heart and soul that Seem to be feeling Lost, numb and empty-
Completely hollow… Like I have nobody left To really follow – Through life with respect
She was so much more Than my Grandmother I knew that before She left this earth
And I told her so More than once or twice Because she had to know Just how very special -
And truly blessed I felt to have her as my friend She was the best Without a doubt -
My Grannio gave me More than anybody Will ever really see… It was an unspoken -
Kind of love That came with no conditions And went far above The normal caring
And average support For a grandchild – Or family of any sort She gave more of herself
To me than anyone In my life ever will Nobody could have done What she did for me
With so much devotion, Absolute honesty And true emotion… Her loyalty was -
Sincerely undying I realize so much Now that I’m crying – And wishing that
I had just one more day To spend holding her hand And trying to take away Her fears and her pain -
That took over her Body and her mind Like never before… In our lives -
I would have sincerely Given 20 years of my life To have her merely Be here tomorrow -
I cannot explain The way I feel today Or how much I pain Is inside of me -
That will never go away No matter how much time passes I know this ache will stay With me forever…
Just as her special touch Will always be with me And mean so very much – To me and my son…

What she would have done If she was still here For him – her only one Great-grandchild…

Eye On The Pie: Branding From an Investors P.O.V.
Published on 2 Nov 2009 at 5:42 pm.

When building a business as a brand it’s important to avoid
a myopic view and consider another important aspect of the
business game as well– investing. After any amount of toil
and hard work to create a valuable product, service or
company the big game is when you go public– when
money-minded people want more, they want a piece of your
brand pie.
For many entrepreneurs who are just starting out or are
flying solo for any amount of years, it’s often inconceivable
that anyone would want a piece of their business in the
future when they are struggling to grow now. For those who
find themselves in this implausible thought or for those who
believe in the ‘brass ring’ of going public there are four
things you should consider now that will enable that kind of
big future.
On a recent flight from Los Angeles to Orlando I experienced
a flight of fancy beyond anything I have ever felt before. When
I booked through Delta airlines, I was issued a ticket on a
company I had not heard of before called Song. I thought it
odd but nothing beyond that. That all changed from the
moment I got to the gate.
Waiting for the plane to board, I sensed a light buzz flowing
through people at the gate. They were actually thrilled to be
waiting. I thought that happy gas had been pumped into just
this section because across from us was another group on
another airline waiting to board who were not feeling the
same thing. Then the pre-boarding began.
A male Latin voice came over the intercom and began the
boarding with… a joke– a different experience. He then went
on to announce the boarding procedure with so much joy
that I couldn’t wait to get in line. I wasn’t even in a hurry to get
on the plane. When I got to the door, the woman taking my
ticket greeted me as if I arrived at her home for a party– a
very different experience.
I walked on the plane and heard upbeat music, saw the
colorful comfortable seats, and was greeted by fashionably
dressed flight-attendants by the time I sat down, the first
thing I said to Nanci, a perky brunette from Atlanta, was
“How can I invest in Song?” The plane hadn’t even taken off
yet!
When working with entrepreneurs and businesses of all
sizes, I often stress the need to create a brand experience
for the customer from every point of contact. Never was this
point hit home so beautifully… and so fun.
Let’s breakdown my desire to invest in this company just
from just a single contact in four points of connection we
humans can relate to:
One, most airlines are scrambling to cover losses and
willing to slash prices to get people flying again– Delta
included. As they scramble to react, new airlines were
capturing market share with lower price points. With Song,
Delta made the decision to expand rather than dilute Delta’s
existing brand and value proposition. They needed to go in
another direction and create something completely different
to join the battle. Now I wasn’t here too observe this
personally, but it seems to me they responded like a nimble
entrepreneur eyeing a market opportunity, not a giant
digging in. To make big advances, bold steps are needed.
Two, from the very beginning they had me emotionally. From
the moment I was at the gate through when I stepped off the
plane they touched me. I got to choose from a menu of great
food and I got to choose my entertainment– the music
selection was better than a record store. I felt so good I
didn’t even think I was in the air. No emotional detail was
spared. They nailed it big time. It was all planned down to
the detail. I wouldn’t have been surprised if the Captain
came on and introduced Cirque du Soleil (the famed
performers from Canada) would be performing soon. They
had me from… the joke. Create and experience I’ll buy more
than a ticket.
Three, they were able to make this emotional impact on me
because the airline itself came from a deep place of belief.
After the unfortunate events of September 11th, the airline
industry was reeling. Delta employees knew they had to do
something to capture the hearts of flyers or cutbacks and
layoffs were on the horizon. They believed they had to deliver
an exceptional service never before experienced at a price
that the public would pay. No more doing business as
usual, they had to create something that they personally
would want to experience. They took the big business of
flight and made it deeply personal. They were able to get me
emotionally because of their deep belief.
Four, as a smart investor I knew that if Song was able to
keep up this level of experience for their customers in a
dependable fashion that it would indeed become “the airline
of choice” for me. I also knew there are lots of me’s in the
world. At this rate of experience, it would be no time at all
before they expanded their routes and create a powerful
brand presence in the marketplace. A smart investor knows
to follow their own instincts and invest in more than just the
numbers– what they experience as valuable– what they
believe in.
And all of this was woven together with the CEO’s passion
of music, hence the name. This was by far the best branded
experience I have ever witnessed… no… experienced!
If investors look at businesses from this viewpoint, then
shouldn’t you as a business owner do the same?
Whether you are a small business owner or a new
entrepreneur develop your brand by focusing on
“experience,” doing so will undoubtedly put your business
closer to your customer AND closer to the investment pie.
And you will also enjoy the journey!
Unfortunately, Song is not public… yet. I’m first in line.

14 Tips for Crate Training Your New Puppy

Your new puppy is arriving and you have heard of crate-training, but are not sure how to make it work for you and your newest addition. From years of experience as a pet-owner, lover and specialist, I have learned some things about crate training that I’d like to share with you.
Crate training is wonderful part of an overall family training program if handled correctly. Your puppy will feel secure in his space if you make it a pleasurable experience from the very beginning by following these 14 tips.
1.Get a crate large enough to allow your pup space to turn around, stand up and lie down for a nap.
2.Put a soft blanket in the crate, preferably with his mother’s scent on it when you bring him home.
3.Make sure to put his toys for chewing and a treat or two in the space furthest from the ‘door.’
4.Put the crate in a corner of room where he can feel out of the way, yet have access to you.
5.Let your pup wander in and out of the crate to get a feel for it, the crate makes a nice ‘den’ for your puppy and he will likely take to it for comfort and solace when he is tired, over-excited or worried.
6.Remove your pet’s collar/s before closing the crate to avoid any choking;
7.Have a bottle of water with ice hooked to the crate if you will leave your puppy for more than an hour;
8.When it’s time to be crated, tell your puppy “Crate” or “Bed” and show him to the crate. You may put a treat in there if you have been training him with treats.
9.Don’t ever: scare him into the crate, put him in there as a punishment or otherwise encourage a negative connotation to the crate.
10.Practice this several times a day during his first few weeks home. Leaving him in the crate for short intervals while you leave the house. He will soon realize that you come back and let him out.
11.If your dog needs something to chew, make sure you give him a toy that he cannot shred, break or otherwise harm himself with. If he is an aggressive chewer, I recommend the Galileo Bone by Nylabone.
12.When you let your puppy out of the crate, immediately take him outside to relieve himself. For very young puppies, this will likely be every 4 hours. (on average a puppy needs a break in as many hours as he is months old – if your puppy is 4 months, please give him a potty break every four hours)
13.When you are leaving, or putting him in the crate, give him his command, “Crate,” praise him gently when he complies (but do not get effusive – you don’t want him to get all riled up!) and then leave without a commotion.
14.Upon returning, open the crate and let your puppy come out at his own pace. Don’t make a big fuss, simply praise him gently, put on his collar and leash and take him outside.
Crate training is a valuable asset to any training program for new puppies and can help enhance your relationship with your canine pal. A happy and comfortable puppy will mature into a well-mannered and loving companion.

T1 Providers – How to Choose?
Published on 8 Sep 2009 at 11:56 am.

With the price of T1 service dropping from it’s high point of roughly 20 years ago, it’s no wonder that more and more businesses are searching out and using this cost effective solution. Whether it’s voice, data, or a combination of voice and data, T1 service providers can satisfy your communications infrastructure requirements.
But where do you find an appropriate provider that offers a great price and support?
This is a great question. The biggest mistake is to base a purchasing decision on price alone. Beware of this. As most know, the net effect of any business purchase is the return on your investment. The ‘cheap’ T1 service providers may be just that. A cheap cost for an oversold service that would be unable to provide the throughput advertised.
When making this important decision to build up (or out) your communications infrastructure, ask yourself some important questions.
a. If you’re looking for a voice T1 service, what are your current requirements? (local/long distance, fax, toll-free service, number of lines needed, etc.)
b. If you’re looking for a data T1 service, what is your objective? Web hosting, internet access for your employees, ASP, etc.
c. If you’re looking for an integrated solution (voice and data) consider both points above.
Obviously these are some general considerations. There are also cost factors, time lines to implement, technical support, hardware requirements, contract time frames and extensibility issues to consider.
Whether you have an in-house technical staff or not, whatever provider you choose for service should be willing (and technical able) to work with you every step of the way to understand and provide the service that meets your needs.
So, how exactly do you find an objective third party to help you understand requirements, cost, support and extensibility?
A communications broker provides an objective look at your unique situation. Communication brokers work for you and not for any specific vendor. If you were to contact a specific vendor, their assistance would be geared towards a specific product or service they themselves offer. Their solution would be partly tailored based on what they themselves can provide. Using a communications broker removes that limitation by having access to products and services from many different vendors. Further, the communications broker can objectively evaluate your situation and design a solution that meets all your requirements and needs.
There are many T1 providers out there. Do yourself and your business a favor and use a communications broker to help you navigate the waters and build an infrastructure that will solve your immediate needs and provide the infrastructure that can handle the growth of your business. Whether you use our services or that of someone else, your business success is too important to leave in the hands of the ‘cheap’ guys.

Remotely Connecting by Satellite To the Hospital – 2005
Published on 8 Sep 2009 at 12:16 am.

Hospital’s and the Medical Professionals associated with them across America have discovered during the last few years that a great deal of efficiency can be accomplished by utilizing the World Wide Web to connect Doctors, Surgeons, Medical Transcribers and remote or mobile Clinics together. A specialist can instantly review an X-Ray or medical chart half way around the world or from a very remote area. Although most of this connectivity is accomplished utilizing high speed terrestrial internet connections like a T1, Cable or DSL connections, there are many areas in the U.S. where this type of internet connection isn’t available.
Satellite internet connectivity has advanced enough during the last year or so to allow a specialist to view highly detailed graphical information (x-rays or scans from MRI equipment) in a HIPPA compliant internet environment that can be deemed “high speed”. The equipment needed to accomplish this is more expensive than a DSL or Cable connection and there are somewhat more complicated security measures needed; however, more and more medical group’s are seeing the benefits from this type of connection and adding satellite internet “ground stations” at the remote homes of resident doctors, medical professionals like transcribers and smaller clinics they serve.
The early efforts to provide satellite internet to this field were frankly miserable failures……either not HIPPA compliant or speeds so slow you could have gotten a courier to bring it faster! DirecWay and Starband solutions just don’t have enough upload speed to handle this type of activity. When you add nearly 2 seconds of latency inherent in this type of satellite connection, you have a bunch of frustrated folks!
The equipment which will be the standard for several years to come includes an outdoor dish (1.2 meter is now standard), coax cabling no greater than 200′ to an indoor unit which handles routing, modem functions and provides the required security. The upload transmitters are much more powerful now……up to 4 watts (compared to 1 watt or less in earlier solutions). They are capable of instantly “ramping up” the wattage during inclement weather to all but eliminate rain fade and can provide sustained speeds in the T1 or better range if required.
What does all of this magic cost? The costs have dropped precipitously during the last year as a result of two main factors: underutilized transponders on many Ku band satellites covering North America and good ole competition between the hardware manufacturers. In 2002 a .74 meter dish setup with a watt transmitter ran over $2,800 for equipment and upwards of $150 per month…..and did a miserable job! In 2005, the same basic cost will bring a 1.2 meter dish and speeds of nearly 1200 kbps download and a sustained 128 kbps or better upload……including a Quality of Service (QOS) guarantee of speed from the internet service provider! Higher speeds are available for additional cost (as high as 2040+kbps downloads and 1028+kbps uploads).
These speeds combined with much lower latency (these internet providers use IP technology throughout the trip through space – not Digital Video Broadcast translated into IP) provide a reliable, secure and fast experience. For the professional or clinic unable to obtain terrestrial high speed internet, it is a great solution.

Pixel Ads – A Million Dollar Idea
Published on 28 Jul 2009 at 4:46 pm.

Perhaps you have heard of the next ‘big thing’ sweeping the
internet… pixel ads. The phenomena was started by a 21 year
old college student named Alex Tew, who lives in the small town
of Wiltshire, England. Alex came up with this now, well
published and quite brilliant idea, of selling pixel ‘real
estate’ on his website (www.milliondollarhomepage.com)… as a
creative way to fund his tuition to the University of England.
His ‘Million Dollar Home Page’ is comprised of a series of
pixels, which are available in 100-pixel ‘blocks’ (each
measuring 10×10 pixels). The page is divided into 10,000 of
these 100-pixel blocks, which equates to a total of 1,000,000
pixels.
Alex’s goal was to sell all the pixels on the page for a dollar
per pixel. One million dollars in total.
Did it work? You bet it did!
As of early Jan. 06, Alex was in the process of auctioning off
the last 1000 pixels on eBay. According to his blog… the
bidding for that last parcel of internet history had climbed to
more than $35,000! And his site is now logging more than 225,000
unique visitors per day. Not too shabby!
But like all great ideas, the copycats have already come out in
force… all hoping to capture even a small fraction of this
truly ‘million dollar’ idea. Currently it is estimated that
there are more than 700 ‘Million Dollar Home Page’ clones… all
seeking to duplicate Alex’s success.
But is another ‘Million Dollar Homepage’ homerun likely?
Probably not.
Alex Tew’s website became popular because he pioneered a truly
one-of-a-kind concept, got people initially interested in
visiting (and then advertising), which created a viral swarm of
buzz… that set off a torrent of self-generating publicity.
His success was a result of two primary factors:
Uniqueness – Although nothing more than another type of banner
ad, tiny pixel ads were different enough to capture people’s
attention and imagination.
Massive PR – Alex Tew has done a masterful job of promoting his
site. The ‘Million Dollar Homepage’ has had press coverage in
more than 25 different countries, including many major media
outlets in the United States, such as… CNN, MSNBC, ABC News,
G4 TV’s ‘Attack of the Show’ and the Fox News Channel’s ‘Your
World with Neil Cavuto’. Not to mention… countless forum
posts, website links and blog entries worldwide. Throw in radio
interviews, newspaper clips, magazine stories, newsletter
endorsements and TV spots… and you’ve got an all out marketing
blitz.
But is the ‘Million Dollar Homepage’ a flash in the pan idea,
destined to flame out quickly…or will others be able to take
this concept and run with it? The answer remains to be seen.
